Yahoo Finance Jose Mourinho knows why Tottenham keep dropping points... but may ‘never’ explain the reason
Jose Mourinho has tried to accentuate the positives of Tottenham’s repeated knack of dropping points from winning positions this season while refusing to reveal the reasons for their frustrating habit.
Tottenham led 1-0 at half-time against Manchester United last weekend courtesy of Heung-min Son’s goal, only to lose 3-1 after a second-half collapse that left them seventh in the Premier League and six points adrift of the top four with only seven matches left to play this term.
It was a familiar tale of woe for Spurs, who have now dropped 18 points after leading in top-flight matches in 2020/21 – with only lowly Brighton (20) possessing a worse record.
And while the under-pressure Mourinho says he knows why it keeps happening, he would not expand further while complaining that people were forgetting about the positive starts his side have made to matches.
“I know why it happened and I know also that you can look at it in a different perspective,” Mourinho told reporters at a subdued Zoom press conference held before Friday night’s clash with Everton at Goodison Park – a rematch of February’s nine-goal FA Cup thriller on Merseyside.
“A team that starts matches well and starts winning matches means something positive, means something positive that you like to forget – the positive aspect of that.
“But I agree with you in the sense that if you’re in winning positions and you lose points from winning positions, there are also negative things side by side to it.”
If those 18 lost points were added to Tottenham’s tally for the season to date, they would currently sit second in the Premier League table behind only runaway leaders Manchester City.
Pushed on the reasons for those collapses, Mourinho replied: “That’s what I’m not ready to discuss with you. I think it has to do with some of our qualities as a team but I’m not ready to discuss with you.”
When asked when he would be ready, the Portuguese added: “Maybe never.”
