JoJo Siwa reveals her 'beautiful girlfriend' encouraged her to come out: 'A really big risk'

JoJo Siwa is opening up about her personal life a bit after coming out as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community last month on social media.

The 17-year-old performer appeared on The Tonight Show on Feb. 3, where she told host Jimmy Fallon that she’s currently in a relationship with “the most amazing, wonderful, perfect, most beautiful girlfriend in the whole world.”

She did not reveal her girlfriend’s identity, but did say the relationship was long distance.

Siwa began her appearance on the show by talking about the first TikTok she posted that made her followers think she might be coming out. In the clip, she lip-synced the line “now you’re one of us” from Paramore’s song “Ain’t It Fun.”

“They come over, and we’re doing this TikTok, and I was like, I think this TikTok that we’re doing to ‘Ain’t It Fun,’ I think this is going to out me,” she said. “And I was like, I don’t really mind … It’s not something I’m ashamed of, I just haven’t shown the internet yet. And there’s always been speculations, of course, but I was like, I think this is gonna out me.”

Over the next few days, Siwa posted a video of herself lip-syncing to the LGBTQIA+ rights anthem “Born This Way” by Lady Gaga. After that, she shared a photo of herself wearing a shirt that had “Best Gay Cousin Ever” written on it.

Siwa said that she decided to post the photo while on the phone with her girlfriend, essentially confirming the speculation about her sexuality before her publicist was aware of the plan.

“We were both like, ‘Technically, I still haven’t confirmed it,'” the Dance Moms alum recalled about the conversation with her girlfriend. “And so I was like, ‘I kinda just want to post this picture on my Reels story,’ and she was super encouraging. She was like, ‘Do it!’ And I was like, ‘All right,’ and I did it.”

Two days after that, Siwa told her girlfriend that it started to sink in just how risky this moment could have been for her future career.

“I was like, ‘Well, technically, that was a really big risk that I took posting that,'” she said. “But if I lost everything I created because of being myself and because of loving who I want to love, I don’t want it. That’s not what I want if I can’t love who I want to love. That’s one of the most important things to me.”

Siwa said she was crying tears of joy before appearing on Fallon’s show.

“I’m just so happy because now I get to share what makes me the happiest with the world, and it makes my heart so happy,” she said.
