Yahoo Finance John Terry names the ‘incredible’ Chelsea FC youth talent who failed to make the grade
John Terry has named the “incredible” youth talent at Chelsea that failed to make the grade.
Former Blues skipper Terry saw it all during over two decades at the club, joining the youth ranks as a 14-year-old before going on to win everything with the club.
So when asked if there was a player who he expected to go on to greatness at Stamford Bridge but ultimately failed, Terry was clear with his answer.
"Probably a boy called Rob Wolleaston at Chelsea," Terry told the Daily Star. "He was like a midfielder-slash-winger, he had so much ability.
"I still know Rob now, but mentally didn't have that to go and push himself.
”He got chosen to train with the first team at a really young age, 17 or 18, did really well and [Ruud] Gullit told him he was going to play in the first team in a cup game. He then phoned up on the day of the game and said he was sick.
"All of us, if we were sick or felt like we were at the end of the world, we would have still gone and played the game, we wouldn't have given up that opportunity.
"He actually did it two or three times and he was just not mentally ready for the game, but ability-wise, incredible."
Wolleaston ended up making two first-team appearances for Chelsea; first in the League Cup and then a brief cameo in the Premier League in 1999.
A series of disappointing loan moves followed before being released ahead of the 2003-04 season when Claudio Ranieri guided the club to second in the Premier League.
Wolleaston, now 41 years old, is now retired having last played professional football in 2014 with Harrow Borough.
