Yahoo Finance Jets donate $1M to social justice initiatives
The New York Jets are trying to make good on their “enough is enough” social justice video from August. The team announced a $1 million donation toward social justice organizations on Tuesday.
That money will be split between four different organizations: All Stars Project, Innocence Project, New York Urban League and Year Up. All four organizations will receive $250,000. The team’s players, coaches and staff will also volunteer at those organizations.
Following that August video, the team formed a Social Justice, Diversity and Inclusion Team. That group identified multiple areas in which the team could do better, including “poverty, race equality and diversity and inclusion, criminal justice reform, police-community relations, access to education and healthcare,” according to a team statement.
NFL, teams and players have donated to social justice causes
The Jets’ donation is among the highest given by an NFL team in 2020. In June, Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan donated $500,000 to help Black communities in Atlanta. In December, Los Angeles Rams players came together for a $750,000 donation to 25 nonprofits focused on social justice.
A few days after Ryan’s announcement, the NFL pledged $250 million to combat racism. That money will be donated over the course of 10 years. At the time of the announcement, the league did not specify what organizations would receive that money.
