Yahoo Finance Jason Day splits with former Tiger Woods caddie Steve Williams after 6 events
That didn’t last long.
After six events together, Jason Day has parted ways with Steve Williams, the caddie best known for working Tiger Woods’ bag through his dominant prime.
Day announced the news Sunday, telling the Australian Associated Press that the split is due to a disconnect in philosophy.
‘Disconnect of old school and new school’
“Parting with Steve was a mutual decision and not an easy one to make,” Day told AAP. “ ... It was a disconnect of old school and new school.”
The split came after Day failed to make the cut at last weekend’s Northern Trust, the opening event of the PGA’s FedExCup Playoff. It was his second missed cut in six events since hiring Williams, the other coming at last month’s Open Championship.
Day’s struggles
Day won the 2015 PGA championship, but has struggled recently to find the form that saw him secure five top-four finishes in major championships from 2011 to 2015.
Williams apparently wasn’t the solution.
Day finished fifth at the Masters in April without Williams on his bag and has secured just one top-10 finish since. He ranks 50th in the latest FedEx Cup standings.
Tension between Tiger, Williams
Williams caddied for Tiger Woods from 1999-2011, working his bag on 13 of his 15 major championships and 72 victories. Woods fired Williams shortly after the 2011 U.S. Open in an ugly breakup that took place in the midst of Woods’ personal and professional downfall.
Williams later wrote in an autobiography that he felt like Woods “slave” while working his bag.
Williams has since worked for Adam Scott, the LPGA’s Danielle Kang and most recently Day.
Day did not hint at any personal tension with Williams when announcing the split.
“Steve has become a friend, and I have a lot of respect for him,” Day said. “I thank Steve for everything he taught me.”
He will lean on friend and golfer David Lutterus on his bag for upcoming tournaments, according to AAP.
