Italy reports 66 coronavirus deaths on Friday, 4,552 new cases

MILAN, Sept 17 (Reuters) - Italy reported 66 coronavirus-related deaths on Friday against 67 the day before, the health ministry said, while the daily tally of new infections fell to 4,552 from 5,117.

Italy has registered 130,233 deaths linked to COVID-19 since its outbreak emerged in February last year, the second-highest toll in Europe after Britain and the eighth-highest in the world. The country has reported 4.63 million cases to date.

Patients in hospital with COVID-19 - not including those in intensive care - stood at 3,989 on Friday, down from 4,018 a day earlier.

There were 34 new admissions to intensive care units, up from 30 on Thursday. The total number of intensive care patients fell to 525 from a previous 531.

Some 284,579 tests for COVID-19 were carried out in the past day, compared with a previous 306,267, the health ministry said. (Reporting by Agnieszka Flak, editing by Sabina Suzzi)
