Investors in DiamondRock Hospitality (NYSE:DRH) have made a decent return of 89% over the past year

The simplest way to invest in stocks is to buy exchange traded funds. But if you pick the right individual stocks, you could make more than that. For example, the DiamondRock Hospitality Company (NYSE:DRH) share price is up 89% in the last 1 year, clearly besting the market return of around 33% (not including dividends). So that should have shareholders smiling. On the other hand, longer term shareholders have had a tougher run, with the stock falling 7.8% in three years.

Let's take a look at the underlying fundamentals over the longer term, and see if they've been consistent with shareholders returns.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

During the last year DiamondRock Hospitality saw its earnings per share (EPS) drop below zero. While some may see this as temporary, we're a skeptical bunch, and so we're a little surprised to see the share price go up. We might get a clue to explain the share price move by looking to other metrics.

DiamondRock Hospitality's revenue actually dropped 54% over last year. So the fundamental metrics don't provide an obvious explanation for the share price gain.
