Introducing THC Global Group (ASX:THC), The Stock That Dropped 29% In The Last Year

It's easy to match the overall market return by buying an index fund. Active investors aim to buy stocks that vastly outperform the market - but in the process, they risk under-performance. That downside risk was realized by THC Global Group Limited (ASX:THC) shareholders over the last year, as the share price declined 29%. That's well bellow the market return of 9.5%. We wouldn't rush to judgement on THC Global Group because we don't have a long term history to look at. On top of that, the share price has dropped a further 12% in a month.

THC Global Group isn't currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. That's because it's hard to be confident a company will be sustainable if revenue growth is negligible, and it never makes a profit.

THC Global Group grew its revenue by 44% over the last year. We think that is pretty nice growth. Meanwhile, the share price is down 29% over twelve months, which is disappointing given the progress made. This implies the market was expecting better growth. But if revenue keeps growing, then at a certain point the share price would likely follow.

The chart below shows how revenue and earnings have changed with time, (if you click on the chart you can see the actual values).

A Different Perspective

While THC Global Group shareholders are down 29% for the year, the market itself is up 9.5%. While the aim is to do better than that, it's worth recalling that even great long-term investments sometimes underperform for a year or more. It's great to see a nice little 7.5% rebound in the last three months. This could just be a bounce because the selling was too aggressive, but fingers crossed it's the start of a new trend.
