Instagram's new app redefines collages

Getty Images. Instagram users can now post videos of up to a minute in length, up from the previous 15 seconds, as the Facebook-owned social photo service looks to lure advertisers away from platforms such as Snapchat and YouTube.

On Monday, Instagram announced Layout, a new app that allows users to quickly create collages and edit photos, which can then be shared to any social platform.

Instagram is no stranger to collage-posting, though. There are already an abundance of third-party apps that allow for collage creation-including Pic Stitch, InstaCollage and more-that give users the ability to choose from a variety of photo grids and customize their photos with optional text or banners.

Layout stands to revamp the collage-creating experience.

Upon opening the app, users are immediately met with their Camera Roll-a change from other apps that force users to choose a photo layout before choosing their photos. With Layout, you can now scroll through your Camera Roll and choose up to nine photos with your photo grid options updating along the way.

The app also offers buttons to filter through your library. There is a "Faces" button that filters through all of your photos, in an effort to isolate pictures of people, as well as a button to separate all of your most recent photos.

Another interesting feature that Layout offers is a "Photo Booth" button that allows you to capture moments while inside the app. When you tap the button, Layout starts a countdown timer and then captures a group of photos that will automatically appear in a layout.

But what interesting editing features are there? Take a look for yourself.

Create the classic collage.

Choose an interesting layout and play around with mirroring and switching images around.

Quadruple the cuteness.

Make a picturesque photo series

And (if you're up to it) take collage creating to the next level.

Layout by Instagram is currently only available for iOS devices in Apple's (NASDAQ: AAPL) App Store. Instagram reports that the app will be available for Android in the coming months.

Facebook (NASDAQ: FB) acquired Instagram in 2012 for $1 billion.
