Insiders who sold US$12m worth of Costco Wholesale Corporation (NASDAQ:COST) stock last year were handsomely rewarded

Even though Costco Wholesale Corporation (NASDAQ:COST) stock gained 4.1% last week, insiders who sold US$12m worth of stock over the past year are probably better off. Selling at an average price of US$528, which is higher than the current price, may have been the best move for these insiders because their investment would have been worth less now than when they sold.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

Costco Wholesale Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the insider, Daniel Hines, sold US$2.7m worth of shares at a price of US$603 per share. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. The good news is that this large sale was at well above current price of US$511. So it is hard to draw any strong conclusion from it.

Costco Wholesale Insiders Are Selling The Stock

Over the last three months, we've seen significant insider selling at Costco Wholesale. In total, insiders dumped US$943k worth of shares in that time, and we didn't record any purchases whatsoever. Overall this makes us a bit cautious, but it's not the be all and end all.

Does Costco Wholesale Boast High Insider Ownership?

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Costco Wholesale insiders own about US$565m worth of shares (which is 0.2% of the company). This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.

So What Does This Data Suggest About Costco Wholesale Insiders?

Insiders haven't bought Costco Wholesale stock in the last three months, but there was some selling. And our longer term analysis of insider transactions didn't bring confidence, either. But it is good to see that Costco Wholesale is growing earnings. The company boasts high insider ownership, but we're a little hesitant, given the history of share sales. While we like knowing what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision. To help with this, we've discovered 2 warning signs (1 doesn't sit too well with us!) that you ought to be aware of before buying any shares in Costco Wholesale.
