Insider Buyers Lose AU$47k As TZ Sheds AU$1.8m

Insiders who acquired AU$166.4k worth of TZ Limited's (ASX:TZL) stock at an average price of AU$0.025 in the past 12 months may be dismayed by the recent 28% price decline. This is not good as insiders invest based on expectations that their money will appreciate over time. However, as a result of recent losses, their original investment is now worth only AU$119.6k.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

TZ Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In fact, the recent purchase by Joseph Bogue was the biggest purchase of TZ shares made by an insider individual in the last twelve months, according to our records. So it's clear an insider wanted to buy, even at a higher price than the current share price (being AU$0.018). Their view may have changed since then, but at least it shows they felt optimistic at the time. To us, it's very important to consider the price insiders pay for shares. As a general rule, we feel more positive about a stock if insiders have bought shares at above current prices, because that suggests they viewed the stock as good value, even at a higher price.

Happily, we note that in the last year insiders paid AU$166k for 6.65m shares. But insiders sold 150.00k shares worth AU$3.6k. In the last twelve months there was more buying than selling by TZ insiders. You can see the insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year depicted in the chart below. TZ Insiders Bought Stock Recently

Over the last quarter, TZ insiders have spent a meaningful amount on shares. In total, insiders bought AU$86k worth of shares in that time, and we didn't record any sales whatsoever. This makes one think the business has some good points.

Does TZ Boast High Insider Ownership?

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. TZ insiders own about AU$1.0m worth of shares. That equates to 23% of the company. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.

So What Do The TZ Insider Transactions Indicate?

The recent insider purchases are heartening. We also take confidence from the longer term picture of insider transactions. However, we note that the company didn't make a profit over the last twelve months, which makes us cautious. When combined with notable insider ownership, these factors suggest TZ insiders are well aligned, and that they may think the share price is too low. So these insider transactions can help us build a thesis about the stock, but it's also worthwhile knowing the risks facing this company.
