Important news for shareholders and potential investors in ING Groep N.V. (AMS:INGA): The dividend payment of €0.44 per share will be distributed to shareholders on 02 May 2019, and the stock will begin trading ex-dividend at an earlier date, 25 April 2019. Is this future income a persuasive enough catalyst for investors to think about ING Groep as an investment today? Below, I'm going to look at the latest data and analyze the stock and its dividend property in further detail.

5 questions to ask before buying a dividend stock

When assessing a stock as a potential addition to my dividend Portfolio, I look at these five areas:

  • Is it the top 25% annual dividend yield payer?

  • Has it consistently paid a stable dividend without missing a payment or drastically cutting payout?

  • Has dividend per share risen in the past couple of years?

  • Does earnings amply cover its dividend payments?

  • Will the company be able to keep paying dividend based on the future earnings growth?

How well does ING Groep fit our criteria?

The current trailing twelve-month payout ratio for the stock is 56%, which means that the dividend is covered by earnings. Going forward, analysts expect INGA's payout to remain around the same level at 52% of its earnings. Assuming a constant share price, this equates to a dividend yield of 6.0%. Moreover, EPS should increase to €1.35.

If you want to dive deeper into the sustainability of a certain payout ratio, you may wish to consider the cash flow of the business. A business with strong cash flow can sustain a higher divided payout ratio than a company with weak cash flow.

Reliablity is an important factor for dividend stocks, particularly for income investors who want a strong track record of payment and a positive outlook for future payout. The reality is that it is too early to consider ING Groep as a dividend investment. It has only been consistently paying dividends for 4 years, however, standard practice for reliable payers is to look for a 10-year minimum track record.

Relative to peers, ING Groep produces a yield of 5.6%, which is high for Banks stocks.

Next Steps:

Keeping in mind the dividend characteristics above, ING Groep is definitely worth considering for investors looking to build a dedicated income portfolio. Given that this is purely a dividend analysis, I urge potential investors to try and get a good understanding of the underlying business and its fundamentals before deciding on an investment.
