Industries traditionally dominated by male workers have been praised for improving job access to women.
Federal, state and territory representatives have been meeting in Darwin this week as part of a COAG select council examining women's issues.
The Northern Territory Minister for Women's Policy, Malarndirri McCarthy, says mining and construction companies have become better workplaces for women, but improvements can still be made.
"We actually put a commendation to the resources, mining and construction industries for the progress they've made in employing women," she said.
"But we have also challenged them to further advance women's participation." She says the benefits will include increasing productivity and addressing skill shortages.
The select council also moved to set up a national data collection system to improve ways of tackling domestic and sexual violence against women.
