The Holiday director shuts down rumours of sequel starring Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz

You may have heard the rumours swirling on Tuesday (December 6) about a potential sequel to the beloved Christmas movie, The Holiday, starring many of the original cast.

Fans went into a frenzy after it was reported stars Cameron Diaz, Jude Law, Kate Winslet, and Jack Black were all on board for the sequel.

On the prospect of a sequel, a source told the Sun: “The plan is to start filming next year. The main [stars] are all signed up and on board.

“The plan is to start rolling on scenes next year, primarily in the UK and in Europe. It’s one of the most successful movies of its kind and still enjoyed every year by millions of fans around the world — it makes perfect sense to revisit those characters and find out what became of their lives after they hooked up.”

Given the movie’s popularity, fans were quick to start celebrating the news.

However, hours later, director Nancy Meyers shared a screenshot of a report by the Daily Mail on her Instagram, writing: “So many DM’s about this – sorry but it’s not true.”

While promoting her current film, Avatar: The Way of Water, Winslet also denied the rumours, telling People: “I read something about that, but it’s the first I’ve heard of it.

“I promise you not an agent or a representative or anyone from the first one around has had any conversation with me about that. Hand on heart, that’s never come up.”

Needless to say, fans were heartbroken to hear that the rumours weren’t true, with one Instagram user sharing: “Ugh. When your heart races then drops in 2.3 seconds.”

And another saying: “The way I went from dancing around my kitchen to audibly sighing the saddest sigh. Damn. Well, at least we have the first one forever and ever.”

The film told the story of a Surrey-based journalist named Iris who swap homes with a movie producer from Hollywood, Amanda, following their respective heartbreaks.

The rom-com involves both characters finding their voices and falling in love over the festive season, with Jude Law and Jack Black playing the objects of the lead characters’ love.

The 2006 film cost $85 million (nearly £70 million) to make. However, it earned $205.8 million (around £168 million) at the box office, making it a huge success.
