Here's Why We Think EBOS Group (NZSE:EBO) Is Well Worth Watching

It's only natural that many investors, especially those who are new to the game, prefer to buy shares in 'sexy' stocks with a good story, even if those businesses lose money. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.'

In the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, my choice may seem old fashioned; I still prefer profitable companies like EBOS Group (NZSE:EBO). While that doesn't make the shares worth buying at any price, you can't deny that successful capitalism requires profit, eventually. Conversely, a loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the sweet milk of external capital may run sour.

How Quickly Is EBOS Group Increasing Earnings Per Share?

The market is a voting machine in the short term, but a weighing machine in the long term, so share price follows earnings per share (EPS) eventually. It's no surprise, then, that I like to invest in companies with EPS growth. EBOS Group managed to grow EPS by 8.1% per year, over three years. That's a good rate of growth, if it can be sustained.

Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. While we note EBOS Group's EBIT margins were flat over the last year, revenue grew by a solid 16% to AU$9.0b. That's progress.

The trick, as an investor, is to find companies that are going to perform well in the future, not just in the past. To that end, right now and today, you can check our visualization of consensus analyst forecasts for future EBOS Group EPS 100% free.

Are EBOS Group Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Like that fresh smell in the air when the rains are coming, insider buying fills me with optimistic anticipation. That's because insider buying often indicates that those closest to the company have confidence that the share price will perform well. However, small purchases are not always indicative of conviction, and insiders don't always get it right.

The good news for EBOS Group shareholders is that no insiders reported selling shares in the last year. So it's definitely nice that Independent Director Nicholas Dowling bought AU$34k worth of shares at an average price of around AU$22.63.

Along with the insider buying, another encouraging sign for EBOS Group is that insiders, as a group, have a considerable shareholding. Indeed, they hold AU$19m worth of its stock. That's a lot of money, and no small incentive to work hard. Despite being just 0.4% of the company, the value of that investment is enough to show insiders have plenty riding on the venture.

Is EBOS Group Worth Keeping An Eye On?

As I already mentioned, EBOS Group is a growing business, which is what I like to see. On top of that, we've seen insiders buying shares even though they already own plenty. That makes the company a prime candidate for my watchlist - and arguably a research priority. It's still necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 1 warning sign with EBOS Group , and understanding it should be part of your investment process.

The good news is that EBOS Group is not the only growth stock with insider buying. Here's a list of them... with insider buying in the last three months!
