Here's What's Concerning About Taseko Mines' (TSE:TKO) Returns On Capital

What trends should we look for it we want to identify stocks that can multiply in value over the long term? One common approach is to try and find a company with returns on capital employed (ROCE) that are increasing, in conjunction with a growing amount of capital employed. If you see this, it typically means it's a company with a great business model and plenty of profitable reinvestment opportunities. Having said that, from a first glance at Taseko Mines (TSE:TKO) we aren't jumping out of our chairs at how returns are trending, but let's have a deeper look.

Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)

For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. To calculate this metric for Taseko Mines, this is the formula:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.046 = CA$54m ÷ (CA$1.3b - CA$113m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2022).

Thus, Taseko Mines has an ROCE of 4.6%. On its own that's a low return, but compared to the average of 1.2% generated by the Metals and Mining industry, it's much better.

So How Is Taseko Mines' ROCE Trending?

On the surface, the trend of ROCE at Taseko Mines doesn't inspire confidence. To be more specific, ROCE has fallen from 10% over the last five years. However it looks like Taseko Mines might be reinvesting for long term growth because while capital employed has increased, the company's sales haven't changed much in the last 12 months. It's worth keeping an eye on the company's earnings from here on to see if these investments do end up contributing to the bottom line.

The Bottom Line

To conclude, we've found that Taseko Mines is reinvesting in the business, but returns have been falling. Unsurprisingly, the stock has only gained 37% over the last five years, which potentially indicates that investors are accounting for this going forward. So if you're looking for a multi-bagger, the underlying trends indicate you may have better chances elsewhere.

While Taseko Mines doesn't shine too bright in this respect, it's still worth seeing if the company is trading at attractive prices. You can find that out with our FREE intrinsic value estimation on our platform.
