Premises have 18 months to switch over from their legacy copper services to the nbn network. We have a carefully managed disconnection process in place with Telstra that ensures no one is left without a connection who doesn’t want one. NBN Co sends up to five reminder letters to premises in ‘ready for service’ areas during the 18 month migration period (in addition to material sent by the telcos). We then send material via registered post to residential premises that have not yet connected five weeks prior to the disconnection date. By the time the disconnection date arrives, the vast majority of services have already been migrated, and we closely manage the final single digit percentage yet to migrate who still want to migrate. Some decide not to migrate as they prefer a mobile only service, it is a holiday house, or they have another provider.

At the disconnection date, Telstra starts their managed disconnection process which includes a period of soft dial tone on the landline (for 10 business days) to alert those who need to migrate. Telcos also reach out directly to those who have not yet migrated. We may also door knock people who are approaching disconnection, and we carefully case manage people on the Medical Alarm Register and the Fire and Lift Register through the migration process.

It is important to note that even though 926,235 premises are reaching their formal disconnection date, the vast majority of these would have already migrated to the nbn network and would have already been disconnected by the time this date is reached.
