Having purchased US$639k worth of Teledyne Technologies Incorporated (NYSE:TDY) stock, the recent 3.9% pullback is not what insiders may have expected

Insiders who acquired US$639k worth of Teledyne Technologies Incorporated's (NYSE:TDY) stock at an average price of US$426 in the past 12 months may be dismayed by the recent 3.9% price decline. Insiders buy with the expectation to see their investments rise in value over a period of time. However, recent losses have rendered their above investment worth US$586k which is not ideal.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

Teledyne Technologies Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by Vice Chairman Jason VanWees for US$639k worth of shares, at about US$426 per share. That means that even when the share price was higher than US$391 (the recent price), an insider wanted to purchase shares. Their view may have changed since then, but at least it shows they felt optimistic at the time. We always take careful note of the price insiders pay when purchasing shares. Generally speaking, it catches our eye when an insider has purchased shares at above current prices, as it suggests they believed the shares were worth buying, even at a higher price. Jason VanWees was the only individual insider to buy shares in the last twelve months.

Insider Ownership

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. Teledyne Technologies insiders own about US$246m worth of shares (which is 1.3% of the company). This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.
