Harry Kane is set to miss the start of the Premier League season and step out of the spotlight over his attempt to leave Tottenham.

The England captain wants to move from Spurs for Manchester City but is likely to be on the sidelines when the clubs meet on the opening weekend of the campaign, regardless of what team he is playing for.

Kane, who turns 28 on Wednesday, is among the players who reached the latter stages of the European Championships who are expected to be working on their fitness when the season begins in three weeks’ time.

As a result, should Kane remain at Tottenham, he would not be facing the club he has publicly stated is his dream to play for. He told Gary Neville during an interview before the Euros that he wants talks with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy and that City is his preferred destination.

Spurs want to keep Kane at the club and will have a fortnight of the summer transfer window left to resist any moves for him after the domestic campaign starts. New manager Nuno Espirito Santo is braced for Kane to be rested for matches as he builds up fitness.

Kane has been on holiday with his family in the Caribbean after being granted time off following the Euros, with England players in action until July 11 when they lost in the final to Italy. Other Spurs players have already returned to pre-season and Kane, plus other players, are expected to be granted time to get up to speed before the season.

The Spurs striker played through last season with little break and went straight to the Euros with England, where his goalscoring form returned in the knockout stages of the tournament. He suffered ankle injuries in the second half of last season but did not have a prolonged spell on the sidelines.

Kane’s decision to look for a move came as he wants to win trophies during his career and has been a losing finalist at Spurs in the Champions League and EFL Cup. City would like to sign Kane and Jack Grealish during the current window but are only willing to do business at the right price.

Sergio Aguero’s departure has made a No9 a priority for Pep Guardiola, with Kane being City’s focus as Erling Haaland looks likely to stay at Borussia Dortmund.

Spurs are also in the market for a striker but want a new signing to play with Kane, who has had success dropping into a No10 role, which would give them an attacking look under Nuno.
