Hansi Flick: Bayern Munich manager to leave club at end of season

Hansi Flick has announced that he will step down as Bayern Munich manager at the end of this season.

Flick, who led Bayern to Champions League glory last season, has reportedly fallen out with the club’s sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic over their transfer strategy, namely the departure of Thiago Alcantara and the failure to buy a proven back-up to Robert Lewandowski.

“Last year, our squad – and everybody knows this – had more quality than the team this season,” Flick said at a press conference this week following Bayern’s defeat by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League quarter-finals.

The Bavarians are seven points clear at the top of the Bundesliga table with five games remaining, however, speaking after Bayern’s 3-2 win over Wolfsburg on Sunday, Flick said: “I told the team today that I informed the club during the week, after the game in Paris, I would like to terminate my contract at the end of the season.”

Flick is widely expected to become coach of the German national team following the European Championships this summer after Joachim Low confirmed he will step aside.
