H&M temporarily closes 95 stores amid widespread protests, unrest

Fashion retailer H&M is temporarily closing 95 stores due to unrest in cities throughout the country, according to Reuters.

The company joins a growing list of retailers, including Target and CVS, that have temporarily shuttered some stores amid protests, some of which have devolved into violence and looting following clashes with police.

Protesters have been gathering to voice their discontent over police brutality against people of color such as 46-year-old George Floyd, a black man who died after a white Minneapolis police officer kneeled on his neck for nearly nine minutes.

Many of the protests have been peaceful. In some cases, retailers have experienced looting or vandalism, reportedly including H&M stores in Philadelphia and Boston.

H&M, which stands for Hennes & Mauritz, has more than 5,000 stores throughout the world. The Swedish retailer had been slowly reopening locations following temporary shutdowns due to the coronavirus pandemic.

H&M representatives did not immediately respond to a request seeking comment Tuesday afternoon.

In an Instagram post Monday, the company said, "We believe in equal rights for everyone. We stand with and support the black community – today and every day."

The company said it would donate $500,000 to the NAACP, American Civil Liberties Union and Color of Change.

"We understand that this goes far beyond a social media post," the company said on Instagram. "We’ve learned the hard way how much work we still must do to live by the values we believe in. We’re committed to using our voice and influence to do our part and stand up against racism and discrimination."
