If you’re feeling the pinch from the pandemic and wanting to take advantage of the second-hand economy, you should start by selling your bike, new data has revealed.
Yep – we are in a bike boom, according to Gumtree.
The second-hand marketplace has seen a 66 per cent increase in people browsing bicycles since the beginning of the pandemic, with Aussies going mad for exercise equipment overall.
“During the peak of Covid-19 and the start of lockdown (24 March to 13 April vs the 3 weeks prior), Gumtree saw a 411.2 per cent increase in people browsing gym equipment, with weights being the most searched for item.
“As we settled into lockdown, we saw a 65.6 per cent increase in people browsing bicycles, with mountain bikes being the most-searched for item during this period (May).”

Sydney triathlete George Miller told Yahoo Finance he decided to turn his hobby of fixing up old bikes into a side hustle during the pandemic.
“Buying and selling bikes second hand on an online marketplace can be daunting with so many unknowns to the untrained eye, but following a couple of simple rules and bringing someone who really knows their stuff can ease any anxiety,” Miller said.
“I've been using Gumtree for years to help myself and others not fall into the trap of buying a brand-new bike only to realise a second hand bike twice as good at half the cost was there waiting for them on Gumtree.”

If you’re going to sell an item of Gumtree, you should definitely get some good quality visuals of your item.
You should also search Gumtree for similar listings to get an idea of price, and always include things like measurements in your description of the item.
“Include descriptive words in your listing to ensure you get the widest audience,” Miller said.
And customer service is key: “Remember that a buyer will be looking at many items, the buyer experience you provide could be the difference between them choosing your bike over another,” Miller said.
“Being polite doesn't cost you anything.”
