Gregg Williams has Jamal Adams' back in contract dispute with Jets: 'You never mess with a guy’s contract'

At least one member of the New York Jets believes Jamal Adams deserves to be paid. Defensive coordinator Gregg Williams said he has Adams’ back in his contract dispute with the Jets.

Williams, 61, added he thinks the world of Adams.

Adams and the Jets have been at odds all offseason, but things escalated in June. Adams — who is under contract through 2021 — is seeking a long-term extension from the team. After the Jets dragged their feet on offering Adams a new deal, Adams told the team he wanted to be traded. Adams even fed into rumors the Dallas Cowboys could be a landing spot, telling a fan he was “trying” to get to Dallas.

Williams has nothing to lose by agreeing with his star defender. For now, Adams is still under contract with the Jets. If Adams isn’t traded, and winds up playing for the Jets this season, Williams can say he always supported Adams. Williams also knows it’s not a great idea to anger your best defensive player. Adams is a two-time Pro Bowler and made the All-Pro team last season.

It’s unclear how the Adams situation will play out, but Williams should come out of it looking OK. If Adams comes back to the Jets, Williams gets to once again coach one of the best safeties in the game. If Adams gets traded, Williams can tell the rest of the defense he wanted Adams around.
