Greek Finance Minister resigns

Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis has announced his resignation.

In a blog post entitled Minister No More! Varoufakis said he was made aware that some Eurogroup participants preferred his absence from meetings.

"For this reason I am leaving the Ministry of Finance today," Varoufakis wrote.

"I consider it my duty to help Alexis Tsipras exploit, as he sees fit, the capital that the Greek people granted us through yesterday’s referendum."

The announcement comes within 24 hours of Greek voters overwhelmingly voting 'No' in a referendum on whether to accept further austerity conditions.

In his blog post, Varoufakis gave credit to the Greek population.

"The superhuman effort to honour the brave people of Greece, and the famous OXI (NO) that they granted to democrats the world over, is just beginning."
