Hulu Just Dropped 'The Great' Season 2 Trailer and It's Epic

Huzzah! The Great is returning for season 2.

After the satirical comedy drama packed a punch with its season 1 debut in May 2020, Hulu green lit the series for another installment. The show, based loosely on the reign of the longest female ruler in Russia’s history, follows Empress Catherine II (Elle Fanning)'s rise to power after she weds Emperor Peter III (Nicholas Hoult). Despite marrying Catherine, Peter only cares about his affair with Georgina Dymov (Charity Wakefield), the wife of his best friend, Grigor Dymov (Gwilym Lee).

And so, the empress is cast aside to forge her own path in the Russian court. But by the end of the first season, Peter wants to win over Catherine. Alas, she has fallen in love with Leo Voronsky (Sebastian de Souza) and together they concoct a plan to kill Peter and rule Russia. Slowly but surely, they recruit others in the castle to help them, including Marial (Phoebe Fox), Count Orlo (Sacha Dhawan) and General Velementov (Douglas Hodge). However, their plan goes awry, leaving viewers wondering what will happen next.

Here’s what we know about season 2 of The Great:

When will The Great season 2 premiere on Hulu?

Season 2 of The Great is premiering on Friday, November 19 just in time for viewers to enjoy all 10 new episodes over the Thanksgiving holiday. In a newly released teaser for the second installment, Catherine and Peter debate about the best way to rule Russia.

Is there a trailer for The Great season 2?

One month before the official premiere date of the second season, Hulu shared the above official trailer. In it, we can see Peter and Catherine continuing their power struggle for control of Russia as they get ready to welcome a new member to their family.

Who is in the cast of The Great season 2?

Based on who we last saw before Catherine incited the coup against Peter, we predict the main cast for season 2 will include:

  • Elle Fanning as Catherine the Great

  • Nicholas Hoult as Emperor Peter III of Russia

  • Phoebe Fox as Marial

  • Sacha Dhawan as Count Orlo

  • Douglas Hodge as General Velementov

  • Adam Godley as Archbishop "Archie"

  • Belinda Bromilow as Aunt Elizabeth

  • Gwilym Lee as Grigor Dymov

  • Charity Wakefield as Georgina Dymov

As fans may recall, Catherine comes to understand in the season 1 finale that she has to give up Leo in order to have a chance to rule Russia. After kissing him one last time, Catherine says a tearful goodbye. At the moment, it's unclear whether Leo dies in the woods, but we’re still holding onto hope that he’ll survive.

What's more, The Crown actress Gillian Anderson is joining The Great cast as Catherine's mother, Joanna. The glamorous socialite from Germany decides to visit Russia after she hears rumors about her daughter's coup. But according to Deadline, Catherine's attempts may be squashed by Joanna who has "more sinister intentions to save her family’s reputation."

Are there any The Great season 2 spoilers?

According to Deadline, Elle was on the set of The Great filming season 2 when she learned that she earned her first-ever Golden Globe nomination. Not wanting to give too much away, she told the outlet that Catherine and Peter’s relationship is only on the brink of chaos.

"Catherine, I feel, has a real soft spot for [Peter], which gets to be explored," Elle explained to Deadline. "Their relationship gets way more twisted. So we have a lot working together.”

Shortly after, the show’s official Instagram posted the first image of season 2. In it, Catherine smiles at the camera wearing a blue corset with tousled hair. What’s more, a growing baby bump is center stage. Perhaps season 2 will pick up with the empress well into her pregnancy and fans will discover who the baby's father is.

"In season 2, Catherine becomes both a mother to Russia and a child," Hulu said in a statement.
