Government announces when free childcare will end

Education Minister Dan Tehan has announced the $1.6 billion childcare package, which entitled parents to free childcare amid the coronavirus pandemic, will end on July 12.

The scheme was introduced at the beginning of April in support of childcare providers with attendance numbers plummeting amid the pandemic.

Early educators will stop receiving JobKeeper payments the following week.

The coronavirus financial support will be replaced with a $708 million transition package, where from mid-next month until late September, the government will pay childcare centres 25 per cent of their fee revenues.

"What we have seen is demand grow and grow over the last few weeks so that we needed to change the system," Mr Tehan announced on Monday.

Child care subsidies will return from July 13 and activity tests for parents will be eased until October.

Those families will be able to receive up to 100 hours of subsidised childcare.

"This package works to help and support those families but also to help and support the sector," Mr Tehan added.

He said it was possible demand for childcare would drop post July 12.
