'Good Doctor' Fans Are Really Confused About Lea's "Thank You" After Shaun Said "I Love You"

From Good Housekeeping

  • The Good Doctor season 4 episode 3 aired on ABC Monday night.

  • At the end of the episode. Dr. Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore) told his girlfriend Lea (Paige Spara) that he loved her, but she didn’t say it back.

  • Many fans took to Instagram to share their thoughts about Lea’s lack of affection.

Good Doctor fans have watched Dr. Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore) and Lea (Paige Spara)'s wholesome, yet complicated, friendship blossom into a relationship. But now that the two are officially dating, there may be trouble in paradise.

In the latest episode of the ABC medical drama, Shaun dug himself into a hole when he complimented Lea’s body but said he didn't like her nasally voice. Although Lea tried to brush off the insult, she was still upset. In the end, the St. Bonaventure Hospital surgical resident knew there was only one thing to do: apologize. But it didn’t go exactly as planned.

"I want to be totally honest with you. I don’t like your body because it’s excellent. I like it because it’s yours, and I love hearing you talk," he told Lea. "When I hear your voice, especially when I’ve had a difficult day, I find it comforting ... I love you."

Her response? "Thank you for your total honesty."

Unsurprisingly, fans went off when Lea didn’t say "I love you" back — a sentiment she expressed at the end of season 3. "SHE DIDN’T SAY IT BACK," one person wrote. "She doesn’t love him back!?!???" another added. "Who says thank you???!!!!" a different fan said. "Are you crazy????? I love you too, Shaun ❤️❤️😢," a follower commented.

Still, others didn't think the situation called for Lea to say it back: "I think people are looking too much into this … She was letting him know that she loved this part of his personality. I believe that’s another way of saying 'I love you,'" another fan added.

As series creator and executive producer David Shore previously told TVLine, season 4 will push Lea and Shaun in new and unexpected ways.

"The challenge this year isn’t 'Can I make her like me?' or 'Does she like me?' The challenge this year is, 'Can I make a relationship work?'" he said. "It’s all the problems that we have in relationships and all the mistakes that we [make] in relationships."

But will this be a recurring issue? We’ll just have to keep watching and hope for the best.
