40-building village hits market for $1.75m
An entire gold rush era village has hit the market in Victoria, with the 15 acre settlement on sale for $1.75 million.
The 8 Allans Rd, Maldon property was the most-viewed listing on Realestate.com.au this week, as curious buyers stole a peek at the historic township.
The wattle and daub buildings date back to the 1850s and make up Victoria’s first notable township.
“[They] are a true reflection of how people lived in rural Victoria in the era of the gold rush days,” the listing by Edward Carthew of Carthew Real Estate reads.
“There is an old hotel, dance hall, Cobb&Co office, general store, smithies workshop, bowling alley, and others too numerous to mention, but also an undertakers complete with coffins!”
It also features a three-bedroom manager’s residence with a veranda, and another two-bedroom cottage which was previously used as motel accommodation.
The colonial town also features seven fully equipped motel units and a former 60 seat restaurant.
“This could compliment the tourism potential of the village. The original owners would cater for buses daily calling in for a tour of the village then morning and afternoon teas.”
The original owners closed the tourism business when they moved in 10 years ago but now believe the property needs someone to buy it and use it as either a private retreat or as a “lifestyle money making enterprise”.
Maldon was first visited by European colonialists in 1836 and was soon settled by pastoralists. In 1853, gold was discovered, leading Maldon to become part of the Victorian Gold Rush, with 3,000 miners arriving within a month of gold’s discovery.
