Lifeguards will stay longer on beaches on Queensland's Gold Coast as the fine, hot weather already draws increased numbers of beach-goers.
Chief lifeguard Warren Young says patrol hours will increase at the start and the end of each day from December 16.
"They'll be 7:30[am] to 6:30[pm] the lifeguards will be working and we just ask people to enjoy a swim between the flags and still the golden rule is no flags, no swim," he said.
He says some swimmers were rescued last week after entering the water outside patrol hours.
"When it's a long, hot day you can understand people wanting to come down and have a dip, but we're just saying the risks are really too great - it's a split second thing and it's not worth it," he said.
