    (Bloomberg) -- The mania that drove crypto assets to records as Coinbase Global Inc. went public last went turned on itself on the weekend, sending Bitcoin tumbling the most since February.The world’s biggest cryptocurrency plunged as much as 15% just days after reaching a record. It was lower by 9% to $55,323 at 10:18 a.m. in New York. Ether, the second-biggest, dropped as much as 18% to below $2,000 before paring losses. Binance Coin, XRP and Cardano each lost more than 12%. Dogecoin, the token started as a joke, was the only gainer among the 10 largest coins.The weekend carnage came after a heady week for the industry that saw the value of of all coins surge past $2.25 trillion amid a frenzy of demand for all things crypto in the runup to Coinbase’s direct listing on Wednesday. The largest U.S. crypto exchange ended the week valued at $68 billion, more than the owner of the New York Stock Exchange.“With hindsight it was inevitable,” Galaxy Digital founder Michael Novogratz said in a tweet Sunday. “Markets got too excited around $Coin direct listing. Basis blowing out, coins like $BSV, $XRP and $DOGE pumping. All were signs that the market got too one way.”Dogecoin, which has limited use and no fundamentals, rallied last week to be worth more than $50 billion at one point before stumbling Saturday. Demand was so brisk for the token that investors trying to trade it on Robinhood crashed the site a few times Friday, the online exchange said in a blog post.There was also speculation Sunday in several online reports that the plunge was related to concerns the U.S. Treasury may crack down on money laundering that’s carried out through digital assets.“The crypto world is waking up with a bit of a sore head today,” said Antoni Trenchev, co-founder of crypto lender Nexo. “Dogecoin’s 100% Friday rally was ‘peak party,’ after the Bitcoin record and Coinbase listing earlier in the week.     A leading group of European clubs are preparing to sign up to a breakaway Super League in an extraordinary 11th hour development ahead of Monday’s planned relaunch of the Champions League. Sources have confirmed that a group of leading Premier League clubs, understood to include Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, are ready to join clubs in Spain and Italy to form a new tournament. It comes just as a new 36-team Champions League format was due to be announced on Monday, before coming into force in 2024. The new format had been designed by Uefa to resist proposals for a new Super League, but that is now in major doubt following a meeting on Friday of the European Club Association. The ECA is split on the new Uefa proposals and the potential benefits to its members. Indeed, it is understood that the rival Super League plans do not currently include the major clubs in France or Germany. Uefa have not commented on the threat but, with a meeting of the executive committee on Monday and then its congress due to be held on Tuesday, the need for decisions have become urgent. They currently intend to push forward with their plans to play 10 group matches instead of six, with Uefa and Fifa having both promised to ban any clubs or players who participate in rival competitions from international tournaments like the World Cup and European Championships. With Uefa officials holding emergency meetings on Sunday, it was also reported in Italy that Serie A have called an emergency board meeting. Corriere dello Sport said that the broadcaster DAZN is involved in the new Super League plans. DAZN, which is owned by billionaire Len Blavatnik's Access Industries, has reportedly been working on the formation of a 16-team league. Other proposals have included a 20-team league, made up of 15 permanent members and five who would qualify annually. According to The Times, that format would see founder clubs share an initial 3.5 billion euro (£3.1billion) fund, which can be spent on stadiums, training facilities or to replace matchday income that has been lost due to Covid-19. This format would see two groups of 10 clubs, with the top four from each group going through to a knockout phase that would be similar to the current Champions League. Matches would still be midweek and continue alongside traditional domestic competition.
