It’s a bad month to be a millennial.

If you’ve been keeping up with the trends coming out of TikTok recently, then you’ll know that Gen Z has declared that skinny jeans are out of style. And the pants aren’t the only casualty — side parts and the laughing-crying emoji are also out. [Editor’s note: As a millennial myself who counts all three of those things as everyday staples, it’s been rough.]

According to the generation born after 1997, it’s now all about the looser fitting denim styles. Essentially that includes cuts like straight legs, wide legs, boot cuts, mom jeans and boyfriend jeans. Thankfully, high-rise styles are still in fashion, and low-rise jeans aren’t making a comeback — yet.

Ripped jeans are also OK by Gen Z’s standards, but you’ll want to stay away from the pairs that have rips hem to hem. Instead, opt for a more updated look with fewer tears and less fraying.

If you’ve never ventured away from your trusty skinny jeans, there are a few things to know. First off, looser-fitting jeans don’t have to be baggy, and they shouldn’t be falling off. Like all clothing, it’s all about finding the right fit for your body.

You’ll want the jeans to comfortably sit at your waist and fall right at your ankle. Once you have the basic fit down, you can experiment with different cuts, washes and embellishments.

Below, shop seven pairs of jeans that are sure to be Gen Z-approved.
