Full-time teacher reveals she works the night shift at Domino’s just to ‘survive’ in powerful TikTok

It’s no secret that teachers are underpaid throughout the U.S., but one teacher’s recent TikTok highlights just how bad things have gotten — especially now that inflation has impacted the cost of everything.

The video was shared by Alexis Longcrier, who, according to Distractify, is an English teacher in Fort Worth, Texas, by day. But by night, she hops in her car and delivers pizzas for Domino’s — not because she wants to but because she has to.

“I’m a full-time teacher,” Longcrier said in the video, sitting in her car wearing her Domino’s uniform. “And here it is, 8 o’clock, and I’m delivering pizzas. I’m doing this because I can’t survive on my teacher paycheck.”

Her statement is sobering.

According to USAFacts.org, the average public school teacher salary in the U.S. was $65,090 in 2021 — an increase of only 1.49% (or $957) from 2020. This is part of the reason why many teachers have fled the profession in the last three years, as COVID placed extra pressure on teachers already underpaid and under strain.

“Everyone’s talking about the teachers who want to leave,” says Longcrier in the clip, “but what about the ones who want to stay but literally can’t afford to?”

The clip has so far earned more than 3.7 million TikTok views and drawn countless comments from users appalled by Longcrier’s story. “Teachers deserve a livable wage your job is so important!!!”

“Teachers are a key aspect of our future, and they do not get paid a decent salary,” another person declared. “We need to fix this!!

Even other teachers chimed in on the thread.

“I’m a teacher with a masters and I sell my plasma to get by,” one person shared.

“I have a masters, and work extra duties work a part time job, sell my plasma,” another shared. “We need a livable wage.”

Sadly, even one person admitted that the salary issue is why they gave up their dream of wanting to become a teacher.

“I used to want to be a teacher until I found out how much they get paid,” they shared. “I wouldn’t be able to survive and pay student loans with that amount.”
