Frank Lampard is interested in becoming the new manager of Crystal Palace, if they decide to replace Roy Hodgson this summer.

The former England midfielder is currently out of work after being sacked by Chelsea in January and he has emerged as a leading contender to replace Hodgson at Selhurst Park.

Hodgson has spoken with Palace chairman Steve Parish about his future as his contract is due to expire this summer.

No announcement over the 73-year-old’s plans will be made until after the season, but it is expected he will leave.

That will see Palace looking for a new manager for the first time since 2017 and Lampard has emerged as a strong contender.

Palace are particularly fond of Lampard due to his work with young players at Chelsea, where he blooded and gave first-team chances to the likes of Mason Mount, Reece James and Tammy Abraham, who have since gone on to become England internationals.

Palace want to give opportunities to their brightest prospects, too, having invested heavily in their youth set-up.

The club now has Academy Category 1 status, while they have also secured a long-term lease for a new academy site opposite the first-team training ground in Beckenham, with planning permission for a major upgrade to facilities formally granted and work nearly complete.

Lampard would suit Palace’s plan to put faith in youth but he, or any other new manager, is also expected to be backed in the transfer market.

The Eagles have a number of players with uncertain futures going into the summer and are likely to freshen up their squad, which is the oldest in the Premier League.

Other contenders for the Palace job include former Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe and Burnley manager Sean Dyche.

Howe has sounded out interest from Palace, but at present it looks more likely that he could end up at Scottish side Celtic.

Dyche, on the other hand, has long been admired by Palace for his work at Turf Moor and the stability he has brought there.

Burnley, however, have recently been taken over and it is feared that could make Dyche expensive to get out of the club.
