Former teacher jailed for 20 years over sexual assault of students

A former Texas teacher has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after admitting to sexually assaulting two students in her van.

Leticia Lowery, 40, who also worked as a tutor, plead guilty in court last week, local media reported.

She admitted to having sex with a 15-year-old boy in her home, while on a separate occasion she stood accused of telling a 13-year-old girl to perform a sex act on the boy in her van while she watched, according to the complaint documents.

The boy’s mother had begun suspecting something untoward was going on and was instructed by local authorities to monitor her son’s phone, according to a local ABC affiliate. She then found text messages that were explicit in nature.

Prosecutor Laura Bond from the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office said the outcome of the trial and the harsh sentence was a good result for the victims.

“I think oftentimes when people hear about offences that are committed by a female against a male child, people tend to minimise it but the effect on the child is still the same,” she said.

“Her taking responsibility and pleading to 20 years in prison is a statement on the fact that she knew what Montgomery County and the community and jurors would’ve sentenced her to,” she added, according to Click2Houston.

Prosecutors said the woman was out on bail in a different county stemming from a charge of online solicitation of a minor boy. That case is reportedly still before the courts.

    (Bloomberg) -- Two private equity firms waded into the bitter takeover battle between Suez SA and Veolia Environnement SA, but there was little indication that their involvement would break the stalemate.Ardian SAS and Global Infrastructure Partners said Sunday they’re prepared to make a friendly, 11.3 billion-euro ($13.6 billion) offer for French water utility Suez, which is trying to fend off a takeover attempt by arch rival Veolia.Suez said it was ready to discuss the potential private-equity approach with Veolia, though stopped short of ending its months-long refusal to engage with Veolia’s takeover proposal. Veolia countered that it would only discuss its own bid for Suez and had no intention of selling the 29.9% stake it bought in the company in October.It’s the latest twist in a protracted battle between the water and waste industry competitors, a saga that’s playing out in the boardroom, the courts and the French political arena. A series of legal skirmishes are likely to continue despite Ardian and GIP’s proposal.Suez’s board unanimously welcomed the move from the private equity firms, whose bid -- if submitted -- would match Veolia’s 18-euros-a-share approach. Suez Chief Executive Officer Bertrand Camus said the PE offer would preserve jobs and competition in the French market and advised shareholders to back it because Veolia’s proposal is effectively “blocked.”For its part, Ardian gave little indication that it was making a decisive intervention, saying it was still up to Suez and Veolia to find a solution to the standoff.Suez GainsSuez shares traded for 17.42 euros as of 2:04 p.m. in Paris, an increase of 2.8% but still below the price of the proposed offers. Veolia dropped 3.5%.“We see this as a potentially positive outcome for Suez shareholders, given that with two deals on the table, an increased counter-offer could be likely,” analysts at Jefferies said in a note. “That said, it does add another layer of uncertainty.”Indeed, Mathias Burghardt, the head of Ardian’s infrastructure business, said there’s “no counterbid on our part.” Ardian will “back a solution that both parties must find,” he said in an interview.The French government has previously pushed for a friendly deal between Suez and Veolia, saying any alternative solutions should maintain French control over the company. Veolia Chief Executive Officer Antoine Frerot wants to build a global giant in waste and water, but Suez’s board and management have resolutely resisted his overtures.Suez has said it can’t hold talks with Veolia until there’s a formal offer. Various antitrust issues would also have to be resolved. Veolia has agreed to divest Suez’s French water business to infrastructure manager Meridiam, and said it could sell some international water assets to that fund as well.In an attempt to make Veolia’s bid more difficult, Suez created a “poison pill” -- a legal mechanism to make the sale of French water assets subject to approval by the current board. A French court has ordered Suez not to make this permanent without shareholder approval. Suez is now seeking to overturn that decision.Private equity firms have recently shown increased interest in recycling services and water resources as governments tighten environmental rules to fight pollution.
