Yahoo Finance Former NBA commissioner David Stern remains in serious condition following brain hemorrhage
Five days after suffering a brain hemorrhage at a New York restaurant, former NBA commissioner David Stern remains in serious condition, according to a statement from the NBA on Tuesday morning.
“NBA Commissioner Emeritus David Stern remains in serious condition following emergency surgery to address a sudden brain hemorrhage on Thursday,” the NBA said in its brief statement. “He is receiving great care and surrounded by his loved ones. The Stern family and everyone at the NBA appreciate the incredible outpouring of support. Our thoughts and prayers remain with David and his family.”
Stern, 77, suffered the hemorrhage at Manhattan’s Brasserie 8.5 Restaurant, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. The New York City Fire Department reportedly responded to a 911 call just before 2 p.m. on Thursday, and Stern was rushed to Mount Sinai West hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery.
Stern has two sons, Eric and Andrew, with his wife of 56 years, Dianne.
Stern retired as NBA commissioner in 2014 after exactly 30 years at the helm. Inheriting a league with no salary cap and no major television contract in 1984, he steered the NBA through countless controversies to grow the game exponentially, both in terms of popularity and revenue. Upon retirement, Stern remained in the field, opening Micromanagement Ventures Portfolio to invest in basketball-related technology startups.
