Footage of Katy Perry’s ‘mom-shaming’ joke at ‘American Idol’ audition goes viral: ‘I am disgusted’

A 25-year-old mom is responding to a “hurtful” joke Katy Perry made during her “American Idol” audition, and TikTokers are outraged on her behalf.

Sara Beth Liebe (@sarabethliebe) is a musician from California and the proud mom of three. Recently, she gained more than 557,000 views when she sat down to respond to the viral clip of her audition footage, which Katy Perry fans were shocked by.

While we’ve seen celebrities go viral for strange behavior before — like Gwyneth Paltrow when she shocked TikTokers with her “daily wellness routine” — many are saying this “American Idol” moment changed their minds about the “Firework” singer.

In Sara Beth’s video, she sits down to tell her side of the story to her audition for “American Idol,” Season 21.

“Well. I didnt think id be making this video, but i just wanted to say a couple things since im being flooded with articles and comments/messages about this,” the video’s caption reads.

According to Sara Beth, she was scouted to audition for “American Idol” — and during that audition, she mentioned that she had three children and was a young mother.

“Katy Perry made a ‘joke’ that wasn’t super kind … I don’t really have too much to say on my feelings about it, because I feel like it’s probably pretty self-explanatory,” Sara Beth says, looking off-camera.

“It was embarrassing to have that on TV, and it was hurtful … But I did want to take this opportunity to say that I think women supporting and uplifting other women is so cool, and I think that mom-shaming is super lame.”

Sara Beth went on to acknowledge how hard it is being a mom, and a woman in general, and to express appreciation to all the moms who have been supportive of her.

“I see all of the young moms, and the moms in general … You’re worthy, keep loving on your babies … Nobody deserves to feel crappy about that … I think if you’re a good mama and you love your babies, that’s all that really matters. Other comments just don’t feel necessary.”

In the footage of Sara Beth’s audition, Katy Perry stands in shock when she learns how many kids the young mom has. She feigns wooziness, which prompts Sara Beth to exclaim, “If Katy lays on the table, I think I’m gonna pass out.”

To this, Katy replies, “Honey, you’ve been laying on the table too much.”

‘Nobody deserves to be spoken to this way’

While Sara Beth has turned off the comments to her video, the footage of her “American Idol” audition is garnering plenty of comments wherever it turns up.

“Why is Katy so mean? This woman is amazing,” one user wrote.

“I’ve lost so much respect for Katie Perry after this, Wow!” another user commented.

“I hope this girl wins. Nobody deserves to be spoken to this way,” wrote another user.

“I was 25 with 3 kids. Now 33. This is shameful, I got so much hate for it too from older women,” shared one user.

“Oh she’s better than me. I would have snapped back. 😳 Gross to see that from Katy and really disappointing,” commented another user.

“The way she talked to her was just nasty and the way she made that backhanded comment about laying too much. Disturbing,” one user commented.

“I am disgusted. Wow 🤬 I have lost respect for Katie,” another user wrote.

“Katy Perry you should be ashamed of your self,” commented another user.

“Women should empower women, not shame them for their decisions,” wrote one user.
