Five things to do with $1,000 that could change your life

It may not sound like a life changing amount of money, but there are a lot of things you can do with one thousand smackers. You just need to approach it in the right way.

While it may be fun to blow it all on a three night bender with your mates or splurge on that PlayStation 4 you’ve been eyeing off, why not put it towards something that will better you in the long term?

I can sense that you’re already yawning at the thought, but before you embark on that enormous bender, at least hear me out first. Your liver at least will thank me.

1. Invest in getting fit

Spring is in the air and the weather is getting warmer so why not celebrate with a brand new bicycle? To kill two birds with one stone, if you’re into that sort of thing, you can ride your shiny new bike to work and get fit on your daily commute!

If a bicycle isn’t your thing, you could acquire the services of a personal trainer or pick up a gym membership. You still have plenty of time to shred that summer bod.

2. Learn something new

Up-skilling never hurts and in the age of the interwebs, it’s never been easier!

There are a number of fantastic online resources like seek learning that can help you find the right course, and a lot of them you can do by correspondence, meaning you can learn on your own terms and continue to work full time.

If you’re not into that, check out Work-Shop, where you can do a short course in almost anything, from drumming to drawing or even public speaking.

3. Dress for the job you want

You know what they say, first impressions count. So don’t be that guy that wears the same five shirts to work every week, invest the money into your future.

You can quite easily pick up twenty brand new shirts for a thousand bones, or get smart about it and use the money to deck yourself out from head to toe in the latest gear.

Unless you have really expensive taste of course, in which case you’re probably looking for ‘5 ways You Can Change Your Life With $10,000’, fancy pants.

4. Get creative

Got some dusty old pictures you painted in your university years, or that hard drive full of unfinished songs you were writing?

Why not invest in your talents? All the cool kids are doing it.

Build a website to sell your art or book some studio time to put that unfinished EP together.

King Sound Studios in Sydney will charge you around $175 an hour with an engineer and most will actually do EP or album packages. Who knows, you might be the next Nirvana or even Justin Bieber?

5. Treat yourself with a little holiday

I know what you’re thinking, how can you change your life with a holiday? Well you’ve obviously never been to Amsterdam, but I digress.

While a thousand dollars probably won’t get you to Europe, there is a tremendous amount of fun to be had in our own backyard or even with our closest neighbours.

A getaway is a great way to recharge, especially if you’ve been under a lot of stress at work. And spending the money experiencing another country is much better than chucking it behind the bar at your local watering hole, am I right?
