This is the first Black-owned clean beauty brand at Sephora — these are my thoughts

Despite major strides for inclusion in beauty, the industry is still announcing “firsts” in 2021. One of those firsts? Lys Beauty is the first Black-owned clean beauty brand to launch at Sephora.

Firstly, the brand is 100 percent cruelty-free, gluten-free, vegan and made from plant-derived ingredients. Above all, the brand prides itself on being affordable—a major plus considering clean beauty can be more expensive.

Most recently, Sephora announced eight new BIPOC-owned brands to its 2021 Accelerator program, ensuring that it doubles its Black-owned brands by the end of the year.

Ahead of its launch, I tried Lys Beauty out for myself. Here are a few of my thoughts:

The foundation is available in 35 different shades. In addition, it’s a buildable coverage and definitely didn’t weigh my face down. It has Ashwagandha, a powerful herb that combats skin stress and visible signs of aging. Additionally, my skin felt very moisturized all day, no doubt because of the formula’s hyaluronic acid.

Another product that’s a quick win is the glossy lip treatment oil, which has sunflower, carrot, sweet almond and macadamia nut oil. It also has vitamin E, which instantly soothes dry lips. I loved this as an overnight lip treatment or for a quick swipe in the morning before Zoom calls.
