Collaboration promotes career development skills and earning a livable wage
CINCINNATI, September 28, 2022--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Fifth Third Foundation and the National Urban League are commemorating September’s Workforce Development Month by announcing results from the first year of a collaborative workforce development program that provides career advancement opportunities through upskilling and re-skilling services to under-employed participants. The $1 million investment from the Fifth Third Foundation has helped individuals across eight selected affiliate Urban League organizations gain meaningful employment and earn a livable wage.
"Through this relationship with the National Urban League we’re connecting individuals with training and skills that provide a pathway to sustainable wages and economic stability," said Kala Gibson, Fifth Third’s chief corporate responsibility officer who also serves as a National Urban League trustee.
Fifth Third and the National Urban League worked together to launch the program in the summer of 2021. Since the inception, more than 1,127 people have enrolled in the program. Of those participants, more than 377 have completed the job training and skills development program. Among participants who have completed job training, 77% reported job advancement. Credentialing, job advancement, and placement have occurred in a wide array of industries including manufacturing, healthcare, transportation, construction, and IT. The average wage of the participants was $17.36 per hour, with reported wages as high as $35.93 per hour.

The following affiliate cities were selected as a result of their experience and the strength of their career advancement employment-opportunity programs, the number of local underemployed and unemployed workers, and strong community partnerships. Each affiliate has offered a variety of skills training to its participants:
Urban League of Chicago: The affiliate is continuing to expand its "earn and learn" model and is becoming a leading training provider in solar panel credentialing and renewable career pathways in the city.
Indianapolis Urban League: Graduates of the two-week new beginning and training works programs are vetted and enrolled in the affiliate’s upskilling program in which they are enrolled in a variety of business and medical preparation courses.
Louisville Urban League: LUL has leveraged partnership with several local organizations to offers upskilling and reskilling courses. The LUL is also expanding opportunities to build generational wealth through homeownership, and entrepreneurship for participants.
Urban League of Cleveland: Cleveland is launching "SOAR 2.0" metaverse to enhance digital workforce training.
Greater Southwestern Ohio: The affiliate has been able to leverage its relationships with several local organizations to provide career development training.
Urban League of West Michigan: The program is offering access to short-term training for in-demand skills and credentials and has been enrolling participants in the following career training classes: welding, forklift safety, inspector certification, high-low driver certificate, certified nursing assistant, patient care assistant, CDL-Bus Driver and CNC Machine operator.
Urban League of Central Carolinas: The ULCC is enrolling participants in classes to earn the ABA certification. Participants learn banking customer service, daily customer service, and communication.
Urban League of Middle Tennessee: The affiliate is taking advantage of the growth in hospitality to provide opportunities for participants to earn certifications in hospitality. They will also enroll participants in Project Management and take advantage of career and credentialing classes.
The Urban League of West Michigan shared the success story of local resident Natalie Crosby who visited the affiliate for housing assistance. While reviewing other services the affiliate provided, Crosby said she had "always wanted to drive a school bus." Leveraging the CDL-Bus Driver training program, Crosby became enrolled and actively engaged. Additionally, she participated in programs that introduced successful interview techniques and was offered a full-time position with a local transportation company at a starting wage of $21.00 per hour, benefits, and a flexible schedule.

Fifth Third Foundation’s investment is part of the Fifth Third’s $2.8 billion Accelerating Racial Equality, Equity and Inclusion initiative that was introduced in 2020 with a specific focus on Black employees, customers, and communities. The workforce development program directly aligns with the community workstream of the AREEI strategy and demonstrates Fifth Third’s commitment to social justice and advocacy work that provides greater access to jobs and skills for minority and low-wage workers.
