Experts probe Gold Coast beach damage

An authority on coastal management is measuring the toll on Gold Coast beaches from the recent wild weather.

Professor Rodger Tomlinson from Griffith University says every extreme weather event can provide vital information.

He says pictures do not tell the whole story.

"The images we have been seeing have been all covered in foam, so it is a bit difficult at this stage to make an assessment but ...

we are piecing together information," he said.

"Our Griffith University team collects [information] with the work from the Gold Coast City Council and others to get a good understanding of where we are at." Professor Tomlinson says each extreme weather event creates a different toll on beach environments.

"We can then correlate that with the wave conditions that occurred during this event and get a better understanding of the variation from one storm to the next," he said.

"So it is very important that every time we have a major event we get out there and find out everything we can about the response."
