Ex-Texas A&M RB Jashaun Corbin gets immediate eligibility at Florida State

Florida State’s football program received some positive news on Tuesday.

The program announced that running back Jashaun Corbin, a transfer from Texas A&M, has been granted immediate eligibility by the NCAA. Corbin applied for a transfer waiver after committing to the Seminoles in late December.

“We are grateful to the NCAA for this decision and to Texas A&M for supporting this process,” FSU head coach Mike Norvell said. “We’re excited for Jashaun and the opportunity he’s going to have to impact this program on and off the field.”

Added Corbin: “I’d like to start by giving all glory to God. I’m thankful for the opportunities He has given me and for this opportunity to play at Florida State. Thank you to everyone in compliance for working on my behalf and to my coaches for their support throughout this process. I also want to say thank you to Texas A&M for making this possible. I’m looking forward to being a big contributor to the team this upcoming season.”

Corbin once was a Florida State commit

Corbin will now have the chance to suit up in 2020 for the school that initially garnered his commitment. Corbin, a native of Rockledge, Florida, gave a verbal commitment to FSU as a member of the 2018 recruiting class. However, when Jimbo Fisher left FSU to take the Texas A&M job, Corbin followed his coach to College Station.

Corbin played in 14 games for the Aggies. He rushed for 346 yards on 61 carries as a true freshman in 2018 and entered the 2019 season as the team’s starting running back. In Week 2 against Clemson, Corbin suffered a hamstring injury that would sideline him for the rest of the season.

In all, Corbin rushed for 483 yards and two touchdowns on 96 carries for A&M. He also caught 16 passes for 101 yards and returned 15 kickoffs for 441 yards and a score during that span.

At Florida State, he jumps into a running back group full of youth following the departure of Cam Akers to the NFL. Corbin, who enrolled at FSU in January, should compete for the starting role for the Seminoles. Others in the mix include Khalan Laborn, Anthony Grant, junior-college transfer La’Damian Webb and incoming freshman Lawrance Toafili.

FSU is coming off a 6-7 record in 2019, its final season with Willie Taggart as head coach. After Taggart was fired, the school hired Norvell away from Memphis. Norvell had a 38-15 record over four seasons with Memphis.
