Yahoo Finance Ex-Mets shortstop Jose Reyes announces retirement
Nearly two years removed from his last MLB at-bat, Jose Reyes is calling it a career.
The former New York Mets All-Star announced his retirement on Wednesday with a statement on Twitter thanking his family, organizations and fans for their support over his 16-year MLB career.

“Mets fans, what can I say? We never got the ring we hoped we would get, but I can’t imagine playing in front of any better fans in the whole world,” Reyes wrote.
At his peak, Reyes was a contact and speed terror capable of holding down the leadoff spot and shortstop for the Mets. In his first tenure with the Mets, Reyes posted a .292/.341/.441 slash line, led the league in stolen bases three times and won the 2011 batting title (in controversial fashion).
Reyes left New York in free agency after 2011, signing a six-year, $106 million deal with the then-upstart Miami Marlins. A fire sale from the struggling Marlins later sent Reyes to the Toronto Blue Jays after one season in Miami. He eventually landed with the Colorado Rockies in the Troy Tulowitzki trade, where his career bottomed out with struggles on offense and defense.
An alleged beating of his wife in Feb. 2016 resulted in a 51-game domestic violence suspension for Reyes, which didn’t stop the Mets from welcoming him back and letting him play out the final seasons of his career. His last plate appearance came at the end of the 2018 season.
