North American Dota 2 powerhouse Evil Geniuses (EG) became the first team in the Dota Pro Circuit (DPC) to guarantee themselves a direct invite to The International 10 (TI10) after they locked up a Top 3 finish in the North American regional league and secured at least 1,150 DPC points on Friday (14 May).

Teams competing in the DPC need to earn over 1,050 DPC points in order to guarantee themselves a direct invite to TI10. DPC points can be earned by finishing in the Top 5 of the upper division in the regional leagues or in the Top 8 of the Major after every season.

EG earned 500 DPC points from finishing in first place in Season 1 of the North American regional league and 450 DPC points from finishing in second place at the ONE Esports Singapore Major. After defeating Team Undying on Friday (14 May), EG secured at least a Top 3 finish for Season 2 and 200 DPC points, which brought their DPC point total to 1,150 points.

EG still have two matches left to play this season, the first being a high-stakes matchup against regional rivals Quincy Crew on 16 May followed by their last match of Season 2 against Black N Yellow on 20 May.

If EG win those two matches, they will finish atop the North American regional league for the second-straight season and earn 500 DPC points in Season 2, pushing their total further to 1,450 points. A first place finish in their league also secures EG a direct seed to the playoffs of the second Major of the year, where they can secure even more DPC points.

With all that said, EG can rest assured knowing that they already have a place in TI10, which will be held in Stockholm, Sweden this August and where a whopping US$40 million is up for grabs.

The race for direct invites

Aside from EG, three more teams are also expected to secure their own direct invites to TI10 by the conclusion of Season 2. These teams are Invictus Gaming (IG) from China, Virtus.pro (VP) from the CIS, and Team Secret from Europe.

IG currently sit in second place of the overall standings of the DPC with 1,000 DPC points. They earned 500 points from topping Season 1 of the Chinese regional league and another 500 for defeating EG in the finals of the Singapore Major and becoming the first Major champions of this year's circuit. IG currently sit in fifth place of their league, which if they maintain will still earn them 50 DPC points as well as their direct invite to TI10.

VP sit in third place with 900 DPC points. They earned 500 points from a first place finish in Season 1 of the CIS regional league and 200 points from a Top 8 finish in the Singapore Major. VP have another 200 points locked up from securing a Top 3 finish in Season 2 of their league, though they are expected to finish in first place once again and secure their spot in TI10 with 1,200 points at the end of the season.

Meanwhile, Secret sit in fourth place with 850 DPC points. They earned 500 points from topping the European regional league in Season 1 and 350 points from a fourth place finish in the Singapore Major. Secret currently sit in fifth place in their league and will have a harder time securing their direct invite to TI10. They need to either finish their league in third place to get 200 more points or finish in the Top 4 to get a spot in the Major to earn more points there.

The 12 teams with the highest DPC point totals after the conclusion of the second Major of this year's circuit will earn direct invites to TI10 if they have not already passed the 1,050 point threshold during the regular season.

Aside from EG, IG, VP, and Secret, other teams in the running for a direct invite include OB Esports x Neon, Thunder Predator, Beastcoast, Alliance, Team Aster, PSG.LGD, Fnatic, Team Undying, and Vici Gaming.

TI10 is expected to feature 18 of the best teams in the DPC, with 12 squads getting directly invited while one team from each of the circuit's six regional leagues will earn their spot in the tournament through a qualifying event.
