Michael Keane, the Everton defender, has signed a new five-year contract. The 27-year-old has become an ever present under Carlo Ancelotti and was recently recalled to the England squad.

“I have loved my three years at Everton and am looking forward to seeing what the future holds,” Keane said.

“The manager is one of the best there has been. Before lockdown I had a good run of form and, hopefully, I can keep that going into this season and keep improving. My best years are definitely ahead of me.”

Keane has made 94 Everton appearances since signing from Burnley in 2017. The centre-back is the latest in a series of recent Goodison deals, following Mason Holgate and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, since Ancelotti’s appointment midway through last season.

Ancelotti is in the process of adding to his squad, with Brazilian midfielder Allan expected to join from Napoli for £25 million, and talks continuing to complete an ambitious move for James Rodriguez. Keane expects the club to continue to reinforce.

“The club has been investing in the team and it is time we started producing results on the pitch,” said the defender, who is part of Gareth Southgate’s squad for this week’s Nations League games. “We want to finish higher in the table than we did last year and get into Europe.”
