Yahoo Finance Evening Standard Comment: Covid cases are falling across all boroughs, but we must not get complacent
The statistics continue to support the exercise of cautious optimism. Covid-19 cases have fallen across all London boroughs, official figures reveal today amid signs that the third wave may have peaked in the capital.
Given the time lags we know exist between infection and hospitalisation, it is further welcome news that the number of Covid patients in the city’s hospitals has fallen for the second consecutive day.
Yet we have lived with this virus long enough to know that complacency is not an option. A further 17 deaths within 28 days of a positive test were announced yesterday, alongside an additional 3,876 confirmed infections, higher than in recent days.
While some boroughs have seen significant falls in cases, others have been more muted. These discrepancies demonstrate we still have a long way to go and that pockets of vaccine resistance are delaying our city’s progress.
There remains a particular concern surrounding young people and the vaccine. Nationwide, 18- to 34-year-olds now comprise more than one-fifth of people admitted to hospital with Covid — a four-fold increase on the winter peak.
That is why we urge everyone, including the young, who are yet to be vaccinated not to delay any further.
Whether in a nightclub, theme park or old-fashioned pharmacy, let’s get jabbed and move on with our lives.
