Ed Sheeran reveals why he ballooned to 15st

Ed Sheeran reveals why he ballooned to 15st

Ed Sheeran told how he gained weight when he stopped touring after enjoying fried food and drinking “every single day”.

The singer songwriter recalled how loneliness on tour led him to drink alone and how he started bingeing at home while taking time off from music.

“I was 15-and-a-half stone at my peak and I think I’m 10-and-a-half now,” he told The Sun.

“I was big, it really showed. I had a 36 waist, now I’m down to 28.

“I always knew I was big but I knew why I was big, too. I loved chicken wings, wine, beer, and I never exercised.”

Since becoming a father, Ed has lost five stone and significantly reduced his alcohol intake according to the newspaper.

The superstar, 30, said he has “become quite clean-living” since the birth of his daughter Lyra last year.

He added: “But I think actually taking time off and not being on tour was the worst thing for my health because I would drink every single day.

“I stopped three months before Lyra was born because I was determined I was going to be the person to drive my wife to the hospital.”

In March, Ed appeared to be settling into a relaxed lifestyle in Australia where he was pictured pushing Lyra in a pram alongside his wife Cherry Seaborn in the sleepy town of Sorrento.

The first-time dad told how “the penny dropped” during Cherry’s pregnancy and that his daughter has been his biggest motivation to detox.

But the star admitted he does not deprive himself from the things he loves and still enjoys the odd glass of wine.

“ I don’t ever want to quit anything either,” he continued.

“Because I feel like if you totally try to quit something at some point you’ll probably end up starting to try and binge it again.”

Ed also opened up about feelings of loneliness as a solo musician on the road and reflected on his mistakes. He told how he has been helped by fellow artists who have faced similar experiences such as Robbie Williams and how he feels a real connection with Robbie’s solo career.

“I think really what happens is you get lonely and you have things that you do in the middle of that loneliness to try and feel involved.” he said.

“It’s very solitary being a solo artist, even a successful one, because you come off stage and then suddenly it’s just you.”

The chart-topper, originally from Halifax, went on to explain he was not seeking sympathy and expressed how grateful he was to have avoided dangerous situations.

Last week, Sheeran revealed he had tested positive for Covid-19.

Ed will release his new album titled = on Friday, which he described as “a bit of a quarter-life-crisis album.”
