Aussie households can access thousands of dollars in rebates for installing solar batteries. And they don’t have to wait to get the energy bill savings.
The New South Wales government is offering rebates of between $1,600 and $2,400 off the upfront costs of installing a battery for households with existing solar. The rebate is rolling out from November 1 but battery provider VoltX Energy is offering it five months early to customers.
Sydney gym trainer Kylie Rosenbaum told Yahoo Finance her family installed rooftop solar panels on their three-bedroom home last year and have seen their electricity bill drop from $1,600 to $860 per quarter.

The mum-of-two said a significant proportion of their bill was from the family drawing from the grid during peak hours. To reduce this, they decided to invest in a battery and were able to get the early rebate. She told others they "don't have to wait".
“It was helpful because we were holding off because we wanted that rebate,” she told Yahoo Finance.
“Now we are saving on our bills already using that stored energy in our battery now rather than waiting until November to get it.”

Rosenbaum said the 10kWh battery was initially $7,500 upfront including installation and with the $1,600 early rebate offered by VoltX it came to $5,900. The family’s 10kWh rooftop solar itself cost about $7,000 to install, including a rebate.
Rosenbaum said the energy bill savings were welcome at a time when the cost of everything seemed to be going up.
“Even just groceries, kids activities but I would say our bills are our number one, especially our power bill,” she said.
The family, who have an electric vehicle, were also keen to move to solar panels to do their bit for the environment.
A quarter of Aussies said their energy bill was among their most stressful expenses in June, Finder found. On average, Aussies spent $384 on their electricity bill and $215 on their gas bill in the June quarter.
Warning over rebate ‘backlog’
More than 3.2 million Aussie households have rooftop solar panels, according to Roy Morgan, including 885,000 households in NSW alone. However, it’s estimated just two per cent across Australia have a household battery.
VoltX Energy believes there could be a backlog of installations when the NSW government’s battery incentive comes into effect in November.
