Dixie D’Amelio’s makeup artist teaches us how to do graphic eyeliner

On this episode of In the Know: Beauty School, celebrity makeup artist and host Patrick Ta shares how to apply a striking graphic eyeliner look inspired by Dixie D’Amelio’s makeup at the Billboard Music Awards.

According to Ta, the key to applying a bold graphic eyeliner is to work with the natural folds of the eyelid. In order to more easily follow the natural line of the eye, Ta recommends keeping your eyes open while applying eyeliner. “The reason why you want to have your eyes open when you are applying this is because you want to see where your eyelid folds,” he explains.

Working with a Bdellium Tools Professional Makeup Brush 762 Small Angle and a Cutcreaser x By Melolops C2: Medium Detail Brush, along with INGLOT AMC Eyeliner Gel 77, Ta starts by drawing a thin line starting at the outer edge of the model’s eye.

According to Ta, the eyeliner should be wet enough to glide easily onto the eye. If your eyeliner has started to dry out, he recommends using Inglot Duraline to revive it.

Next, Ta draws a second line starting at the model’s lash line, working towards the perimeter. “Whatever side of the tip [of the brush] is a little bit more pointy, that’s the point that you want to flick,” Ta explains. “So that’s gonna be the thinnest point of the brush. So then you want the tip of the liner to be as small as possible.”

Applying eyeliner evenly can be difficult, Ta notes. Fortunately, Ta has a few tips for making application easier. “It’s honestly really hard to get your eyeliner to be the same, so you always want to make sure that whatever brush you’re using is nice and flat so you can get a really nice, sharp, clean line,” Ta explains.

And, of course, if you mess up, you can always erase your mistakes. Ta shows how to use Glossier Milky Oil waterproof makeup remover to erase flawed details. “If you guys ever make any mistakes, the easiest way to take it off is with any sort of oil cleanser,” he notes.

Once you’re satisfied with your lower eyeliner line, it’s time to add the upper line. “For the top of the liner, I’m going to take this C2 brush, which the hair on this brush is a bit longer, so you have more movement to create a shape,” Ta narrates, as he draws a meticulous line on the model’s upper eyelid. “Since her eyes are open, I can connect from where the crease folds and work my way towards the end of the liner.”

Once the upper line is done, your look is complete! If your first attempt wasn’t perfect, don’t be discouraged. Applying graphic eyeliner requires precision, but it’s simple once you get the hang of it. Ta notes that, if you’re ever in doubt, just follow the natural shape of the eye. He explains, “One of the easiest ways to create the perfect shape is to just follow your bottom water line, working your way towards the end of your brow.”
