Did Orgenesis' (NASDAQ:ORGS) Share Price Deserve to Gain 44%?

If you want to compound wealth in the stock market, you can do so by buying an index fund. But one can do better than that by picking better than average stocks (as part of a diversified portfolio). To wit, the Orgenesis Inc. (NASDAQ:ORGS) share price is 44% higher than it was a year ago, much better than the market return of around 18% (not including dividends) in the same period. If it can keep that out-performance up over the long term, investors will do very well! Zooming out, the stock is actually down 5.5% in the last three years.

Because Orgenesis made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. That's because it's hard to be confident a company will be sustainable if revenue growth is negligible, and it never makes a profit.

Orgenesis grew its revenue by 27% last year. We respect that sort of growth, no doubt. Buyers pushed the share price 44% in response, which isn't unreasonable. If the company can maintain the revenue growth, the share price could go higher still. But it's crucial to check profitability and cash flow before forming a view on the future.

A Different Perspective

It's good to see that Orgenesis has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 44% in the last twelve months. That certainly beats the loss of about 0.7% per year over the last half decade. This makes us a little wary, but the business might have turned around its fortunes. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. For example, we've discovered 2 warning signs for Orgenesis (1 is potentially serious!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
