Did Changing Sentiment Drive MacroGenics's (NASDAQ:MGNX) Share Price Down A Worrying 58%?

If you are building a properly diversified stock portfolio, the chances are some of your picks will perform badly. But the last three years have been particularly tough on longer term MacroGenics, Inc. (NASDAQ:MGNX) shareholders. Regrettably, they have had to cope with a 58% drop in the share price over that period. The more recent news is of little comfort, with the share price down 43% in a year. Furthermore, it's down 22% in about a quarter. That's not much fun for holders.

MacroGenics isn't a profitable company, so it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally expect to see good revenue growth. That's because it's hard to be confident a company will be sustainable if revenue growth is negligible, and it never makes a profit.

Over three years, MacroGenics grew revenue at 5.0% per year. That's not a very high growth rate considering it doesn't make profits. It's likely this weak growth has contributed to an annualised return of 25% for the last three years. When a stock falls hard like this, some investors like to add the company to a watchlist (in case the business recovers, longer term). Keep in mind it isn't unusual for good businesses to have a tough time or a couple of uninspiring years.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 4.2% in the last year, MacroGenics shareholders lost 43%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 8.6% per year over five years. We realise that Buffett has said investors should 'buy when there is blood on the streets', but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality businesses.
